Hello lovelies,
I have huge news – I am officially a blondie!
This is not the first time I have attempted to go to the brighter side; I endeavoured this same journey a couple of years back, but unfortunately the time and money were spent in vain.

Here is a brief (but not so brief) background hair story:
When I moved to university, I decided to be slightly more experimental with my hair. I had grown bored of my natural mousey brown locks, and decided to bite the bullet and dye my hair two shades darker (crazy right). I went to a reputable salon in Oxford and the hairdresser suggested I opt for a warmer dark brown shade than originally intended, as this would supposedly compliment my skin tone better. Trusting the word of the “wise”, I decided why not and went ahead with the job, and oh my was it the worst decision of my life – my poor hair! What was meant to be a subtle change, ended up as vibrant red hair - it was horrendous – it was so far off to what I had requested. The hairdresser saw the look of devastation on my face and booked me in for a second appointment to rectify the colour. After the second treatment, my hair was dark brown with a purplish undertone. Slightly better, awful nevertheless.
After the two treatments, I decided to take it upon myself to undo the damage, so I went to Tesco’s and purchased two cheap box dyes. Out of desperation, I did both treatments on the same day in a strive to salvage the colour of my hair. The end result was a very unflattering black colour and notably damaged hair; I experienced horrible breakage and my tips felt like straw. My poor healthy, virgin hair had been mutilated to a state of no return.

After months and months of regular deep moisturising treatments, my hair had recovered to a somewhat decent condition. The black had faded to a dark brown and my hair had become less prone to breakage. So at this point I decided to experiment again! This time, I wanted to start my transition to becoming a blonde, so I decided to go to a balayage specialist. Nicky Lazou is massive on Instagram and I had fallen in love with her gallery of beautifully styled clientele.

As soon as I had sat down on the chair, Nicky instantly pointed out the severe damage to my hair. From a professional standpoint, Nicky almost refused to treat my hair in order to prevent further damage –it was gutting to hear! She explained that I would have to be patient with the conversion and that I would presumably need another 3-4 treatments before being able to achieve my desired shade of blonde. Throughout the appointment she kept suggesting various treatments that would help improve the condition of my hair – many that I still use up to this day.
I had such an amazing experience at Nicky’s; she welcomed me into her home with open arms and was just the most wonderful host. All the girls chatted away with drinks and nibbles, and it honestly felt like I was visiting one of my girlfriends! It was such a relaxed environment. Unfortunately, after the third treatment I was unable to sustain my exorbitant hair habits. I was extremely busy with university which prevented me from working full time, so the trips to Birmingham and the regular hair treatments proved too costly. So after a few months, I dyed my hair back to brown to ease the maintenance.

Now back to the present day, I once again grew bored of my brown hair.
Browsing through Instagram, I came across Samantha Cusick’s Instagram profile and I instantly fell in love; in an impulsive act I decided to call up and book an appointment for the following week.

(Before the treatment - natural curls with no hair product)

On the day of the appointment, I was welcomed by the lovely team and escorted downstairs where I came upon the most gorgeous and whimsical setting. Rachel, the colour technician, subsequently introduced herself and we discussed the colour and style that I was aiming to achieve. Given my history of hair damage, she used this time to settle my expectations but assured me that she would try her best to get me to as close to what I wanted as she could.
The service was impeccable; Rachel was super friendly and I had such an enjoyable time chatting away.

What made the experience even more pleasant and relaxing were the complimentary cocktails! Being a follower of Samantha Cusick on Snapchat, I chose the notorious Mermaid cocktail which ingredients include cotton candy and edible glitter – it was yum! And strong. Very strong. It went straight to my head. I tripped and almost fell on my way to the basin to wash my hair. It was hella’ embarrassing. I wanted to die. But I retired back to my seat and drank away the shame.
Rachel is honestly a magician; how she managed to tone down the stubborn red undertone (from years ago!), neutralise the brown and brighten my hair to this extent, is beyond me! Wow, wow, wow. Not for a second did I expect to actually come out of the salon blonde – Rachel exceeded my expectations! Not only was I amazed with my hair colour, but my hair felt amazing to the touch - somehow my hair felt healthier than when I had walked in, so bizarre! All hail to the power of Olaplex!
